Summer Book Crush

Welcome to Amazing Words Wednesday, the day we enter the labyrinth of language and see what we can find. Today I’m looking at the etymology of just one word: crush. Because when I was asked to participate in the Summer Book Crush (which is awesome as you’ll see below), I began to wonder why it’s called a crush.

A little research brought me to these conclusions on the word crush:

  • The word “crush” comes from the French word croissir, which means to crash or break. You’ve all had a crushing hug at least once, right?
  • The word “mash” started somewhere about 1870 to indicate amorous desire for another. To mash on someone meant to flirt with them. Don’t ask me where that came from; the etymology is sparse.
  • Crush was likely substituted for mash after a while. It was first recorded in 1884 by Isabella Maud Rittenhouse: “Wintie is weeping because her crush is gone.”

Sources: Globe and Mail; Online Etymology Dictionary

I presume the idea of crushing is that you want to hold hard and never let go, to mash someone into your life-sized squeeze toy.

Which is kind of what you want to do with a favorite book! So check out the Summer Book Crush below. I’ve read a few of these books, and I know several of the authors. Happy Summer Book Break Mash Crush!
