Big and Chunky: #ROW80 Update

I am becoming more and more one of those writers who looks at world through my author kaleidoscope. As things happen around me and life unfolds, I think, “Hey, that could go in my novel!” “That could be a blog post.” “That reminds me of writing.” Which means that my brain is stewing with ideas much of the time.

So after participating in Zumba three times this week (muscles sore, booty happy), there is a song that I cannot get out of my head. Yep, it’s in the title: Big & Chunky by Will I Am. Here’s a quick video of it.

My take-away? “Big and Chunky” is a good way to set writing goals. Your writing goals should be BIG enough that you are challenged to meet them, though not sunk under their weight. They should also be CHUNKY, as in substantial. Sure I could throw out a BIG goal of commenting on 50 blogs a week, and that would challenge me, but it isn’t as CHUNKY, or substantive, as commenting on a few blogs and using the other time to knock out writing the novel. I want my goals to be both.

Around halfway through the ROW80 round, I take a look at my goals and decide if they are big enough and chunky enough. We’re not there yet, but that time will be here before I know it!

Here are my ROW80 goals for Round 1 of 2012:

  • Finish editing Grace & Fire mystery novel and send to reader. Finished January 19.
  • Write 2,500 words per week on young adult novel, Sharing Hunter. Logged 3,253 words. Woot! Woot!
  • Blog twice a week on Amaze-ing Words Wednesday and Deep-Fried Friday, and check-in with ROW80 updates twice a week. Posted Our Love of Lyrics on Wednesday, Top 10 Dance Crazes on Friday, and two ROW80 updates.
  • Comment on at least 10 blogs per week (not counting ROW80 update comments). Commented on 15 blog posts.
  • Read one writing craft book. Started reading On Writing, about 45 pages in. The first 100 or so pages are Stephen King’s memoir.
  • Read five fiction books. 3 down. Reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen for the 4th book.
  • Exercise three times per week. Zumba THREE times this week! There are two morning classes in my community (Tuesday/Thursday), and then it just happened to be one of a few Saturdays when Friendswood offers free Zumba in the Park. There I was in public with about 25 other women exercising/dancing to Michael Jackson, Will I Am, and a lot of Spanish-speaking people singing who knows what.

This was probably my best week! Feeling good about my progress.

How are my fabulous fellow ROW80ers doing? Are you feeling big and chunky in your progress this week?

  1. Well I have a confession to make. For my own goals this past week when I headed to drill I lost all my time for writing between trying to get rest and doing “work.” So I’ve spent the four hour drive home working on my fiction to get caught up. And I projected on my blog that I finished my goals for the week. So my Big and Chunky goals are working for me right now.
I also know the feeling for everything that you see being something that you think about writing. I know a lot of disabled folks and I want to write a story about one of them and the courage that it takes to be one of them. They are so inspiring to me, because just like everyone else they want to be normal and accepted for who they are. But the challenges they face for that same goal are incredible.
I love your goals by the way. They keep inspiring me to be more specific with what I want my goals to be. Thank you for your blog! It lights the way for me to find success!

  2. Wowzers! Girl, you are on FIRE!! Fire I say! I love it. Woot woot shaking my hot pink sparkly pompoms at you with huge fist pumps!!! YOU ROCK!!
I am so inspired and pumped up by your post to have me the BEST week yet! Here’s to both of us nailing our goals out of the park this week….SWEET!!!

  3. Between wanting to get up and dance to the awesome song with you and wanting to jump up and down cheering because you had such a great week, your post has inspired me to move, to write and to just generally “be” happier. Thanks bunches.

  4. I have had a bad habit of picking goals that are too big and chunky! I think I hit a good happy medium this time, as I’ve mostly been hitting the weeklies and am still on target for the overarching ones. That’s another bad habit I have – I have to break the big chunk into little chunks to get anything done, but I forget the big chunk! Sounds like you kicked some major booty on yours this week – keep up the good work!

  5. Sounds like you’re doing great! I just did a “Body Pump” class, which is like… aerobic weight lifting. AMAZING, but two days later I am still sore! I have the Zumba DVDs and they are a BLAST!

I LOVED On Writing. Such a good book! I really want to reread it again.

  6. What a great week! Sounds like you are on track and doing well! I am yet to try Zumba but hear such good things about it. I would definitely recommend Will write for shoes especially if you write or plan to write any chick lit but I think lots of the tips are universal.

    Have an amazing week!

  7. Way to go on your writing AND fitness goals. Zumba is definitely “kick butt.” I only got as far as Chair Zumba for the older folks before I gave up altogether. Teehee…

You are going to LOVE On Writing by Stephen King. It was THE book which inspired me to delve into writing fiction.
